Notion sync errors are one of the most common problems users hit — and one of the most frustrating, because your work suddenly looks like it’s vanished. The good news: almost every sync problem has a known fix, and they’re all quick to try.

This guide walks through the fixes in order, from the most common cause to the most drastic.

1. Check Notion’s status page first

Before touching anything on your device, check Notion’s status page. Sync outages happen — usually a few times a year — and when they do, nothing on your side will help. If the status page shows an incident, wait it out. Your data is safe; it just isn’t moving yet.

2. Restart the app completely

“Have you tried turning it off and on again” applies here. On desktop, quit Notion fully (not just close the window) and reopen it. On mobile, swipe the app away and relaunch. This resets the sync connection and clears transient errors in about 10 seconds.

3. Check your internet connection

Notion needs a stable connection to sync. If you’re on Wi-Fi, try:

  • Toggling airplane mode on and off on mobile
  • Switching to mobile data briefly to test if the problem is your network
  • Checking that a VPN isn’t blocking Notion (some VPNs interfere with WebSocket connections)

4. Make sure you’re not offline in Notion

Notion has an offline mode. On desktop, click your workspace icon in the bottom-left corner — if it shows “Offline,” click “Go online.” You can also check the sidebar: workspaces with a cloud icon with a slash through it are offline.

5. Clear the app cache

A corrupted cache is a classic cause of sync loops. The fix is safe — it doesn’t delete your data, just local cached files:

  • Windows: %AppData%\Notion — delete the Cache folder (Notion will rebuild it)
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Notion — delete the Cache folder
  • Mobile: Settings → Notion → Clear Cache (Android), or offload/reinstall the app (iOS)

Always make sure you’ve seen your content sync before clearing cache — if in doubt, wait for a successful sync first.

6. Update Notion

Outdated versions occasionally hit sync bugs that are fixed in the next release. Check your app store or the download page for the latest version. Notion updates quietly in the background on most platforms, but if you’ve disabled auto-updates, this is worth checking.

7. Reinstall the app (the nuclear option)

If nothing above worked, uninstall and reinstall. Your data lives on Notion’s servers — reinstalling the app never touches it. Log back in and let it re-download your workspace. This fixes nearly all remaining sync issues.

When to contact support

If you’ve tried all seven and your data still isn’t syncing, it’s time to open a ticket at notion.so/contact — include which device, which version, and what you see on the status page. Sync issues that survive a reinstall are rare and usually server-side.

FAQ

Will I lose data if I clear the Notion cache? No. The cache is just local copies of pages you’ve opened. Your actual data is stored on Notion’s servers.

Why does Notion say “Changes will sync when back online”? You’re in offline mode. Your edits are saved locally and will upload when the connection returns — don’t close the app before they do.

Do sync errors affect everyone in a shared workspace? Sometimes. If the problem is on Notion’s side, it affects all members. If it’s only you, it’s almost always device-specific — start with steps 2–5.
